Support Vega's Open-Source Development
Vega powers data visualization across research, journalism and industry. Help us sustain and grow the ecosystem.
The Vega ecosystem — Vega, Vega-Lite, Vega-Altair, VegaFusion, vl-convert — is open-source data visualization infrastructure. Charts render natively in any browser or server-side; Vega-Altair brings the same grammar to Python.
- 44+ million monthly PyPI downloads for Altair
- 3+ million monthly CDN downloads for Vega and Vega-Lite
- One of the most widely used visualization stacks in the Python and web ecosystems
- Trusted by companies, research institutions, data teams, and tool vendors worldwide
Vega is maintained by a small volunteer team. Without sustained funding, roadmap progress slows, maintenance becomes harder, and the ecosystem risks stagnation.
Your sponsorship directly unlocks: faster feature development, improved documentation, reliable long-term maintenance, and a healthier ecosystem for everyone who builds on Vega — including companies, startups, research labs, and data teams.
- Core maintainers — Dedicated time for maintainers to work on Vega instead of solely putting work in during spare time. Essential for long-term sustainability and accelerated progress.
- Mentored student contributors — Scoped features under maintainer supervision; real impact on the codebase, valuable student experience, and an onboarding ramp for potential new core contributors. Previous support has sponsored core improvements to the development ecosystem
- Infrastructure & documentation — Hosting, issue triage, and ongoing documentation improvements.
- Core-developer or user conference — Where roadmap direction is set and contributors meet; attendance funded for core developers. We hosted a Vega conference in 2023 with sponsorship from the Moore foundation.

We're happy to discuss invoicing that fits your budget cycle. Custom tiers are possible for larger commitments.
Vega is a NumFOCUS sponsored project. All funds are managed transparently through NumFOCUS (501(c)(3)); contributions may be tax-deductible.
Current sponsor: We're grateful to Omni for their support as an early sponsor.
Funding will have immediate impact on progress toward our goals. See the roadmap project board for current focus areas.
Organizations at the Partner tier are invited to share priorities with the steering committee ahead of each planning cycle. Input is heard; it is not binding.
Reach out to Dominik Moritz (domoritz@cmu.edu) or any Vega Steering Committee member. We'll confirm your tier, collect logo details, and NumFOCUS will handle invoicing and payment.
